Today among the best known producers on the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: Château de Beaucastel, Henri Bonneau, M. Chapoutier, Clos des Papes, Domaine de la Janasse, Domaine de La Mordorée, La Nerthe, Rayas, Roger Sabon, Domaine du Vieux Télégraph.
Rolled pebbles, gravel or sand are the characteristic soils of the appellation. There are 13 typical grape varieties of the vineyard, the 3 main in terms of volumes produced are: Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
Formerly called Châteauneuf-Calcernier, it was Joseph Ducos (owner of Château la Nerthe) who campaigned to rename the town "Châteauneuf-du-Pape". The vineyard is indeed dominated by the castle in which the Popes of Avignon came to spend the summer.
Among the best vintages of the appellation there are the 1929 vintage and 1961 great wines. The great vintages of 1978, 1985, 1988 or even the vintage wine 1989, 1990, 1995 and the wines of 1998, which are considered to be the best. Finally, the 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2011 vintages offer very great wines.
