Jean-Marc Quarin
(1-2006) Dark red. Good intensity. Clean. Intense. Very very fruity. Blackberry, red currant, strawberry, licorice. Strong. Fine. Fleshy with a strong attack but a bit lively, this wine is very very tasty and evolved licorice and a bit rugged tannins. A nice long tasty finish bu the consistency s a bit rough.

(4-2005) Only 43% of the production made it into the final blend of this remarkable 2002. Produced from a low 17 hectoliters per hectare, it includes 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the highest alcohol ever achieved in a Leoville Las Cases (13.5%) as well as a lofty pH of 3.85. Nevertheless, the impression is one of a structured wine with considerable density, a rubypurple color, layers of flavor, and a classic overall personality. The wine exhibits pure black currant, licorice-infused fruit, huge body, a viscous mid-palate, and a long, heady finish. I suspect this wine won’t be nearly as charming as the 2003 in its youth, but it hasn’t yet closed down, and I am amazed at just how rich, intense, and full-bodied it tastes even after bottling. This is certainly one of the half dozen or so candidates for wine of the vintage.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

The Château Léoville Las Cases is a french estate located in Saint Julien Beychevelle in Gironde. It is a second classified growth in Médoc classification of 1855.

Jean-Hubert Delon is not lacking in passion nor discipline. The vintages who marched during the past quarter century testify for him. In the Saint-Julien appellation, whether the wines are from in important vintage or a less significant one, they are without a doubt amongst the best. A property absolutely exemplary in the Bordeaux region. The largest of the three Léoville is certainly the greatest in quality and, in the opinion of many, it should be among the first growths. Michel Delon, the "Lord" as he was known, is largely responsible for this recognition.

Since 1976, when he succeeded his father, he worked to reconstruct the drainage of land, to modernize and expand the winery, monitor the performance of its vines. He had this deep attachment to land and work values. His son Jean-Hubert took over in 2000, following his disparition. Las Cases is a  typical Saint-Julien of rare nobility of expression and has a breathtaking structure.
